Built in the Nordics: The Technology Stack for Better Infrastructure

No country built a technology industry by simply exporting its raw resources. Petroleum-rich Norway knows this.

The Nordics have more to offer than land, power and good engineering. Across real estate and infrastructure, some of the world’s most interesting technology is being developed here — in energy flexibility, automation, modelling, HVAC, grid intelligence and connected systems.

In a series of short talks, leading technology experts from Siemens, Swegon, Simien, Elink and Noova take us through the technologies that can make buildings and infrastructure more efficient, flexible and resilient — from ordinary real estate to the new generation of AI and data-centre infrastructure.

This is a tour de force of the systems underneath the buildings: how we model, optimise, automate, connect and reuse energy — and why Nordic technology could become an export industry in its own right.

    No grid, no glory. The real bottleneck for AI and data center growth isn’t chips or energy - but access to the grid.

    Robert Nyiredy explores how smarter grid operation and flexible data centers can unlock capacity already hiding in today’s infrastructure. With controlled loads, storage and intelligent automation, data centers can become active grid assets rather than passive power consumers. For Norway, that could turn a constraint into a competitive advantage - and create a Nordic data center industry built on capability, not just cheap power.

    Swegon: The Cheapest Megawatt Is the One the Building Doesn’t Need

    Why are we still heating, cooling and ventilating empty space?

    Real estate is asking for more power while enormous amounts of energy are still spent conditioning buildings according to schedules rather than actual demand.

    Swegon shows what happens when ventilation, heating and cooling follow people instead: rooms get exactly what they need, when they need it. With demand-controlled indoor climate, the building becomes part of the energy solution — cutting peak demand and operating cost without compromising comfort.

    Before asking the grid for another megawatt, how much can the building give back itself?

    Simien: Designing the energy-efficient data centre.

    Data centres are ultimately an energy and thermal-management problem, making Simien's building-energy modelling highly relevant. Its technology can simulate energy use, cooling, ventilation and energy supply, allowing developers and engineers to test design choices and efficiency measures before they are locked into the building. Simien represents the analytical layer for designing and optimising the physical infrastructure around compute. Caverion is a useful reference customer: its energy team uses SIMIEN PRO for energy modelling, including projects where it guarantees energy savings.

    Noova: Turning data centres into grid assets

    For data centres, the energy challenge is increasingly about when and how power is used, not simply how much is available. Akuna, part of Noova Energy Systems, brings energy optimisation and flexibility into that equation: controlling loads, batteries and other energy assets to reduce peaks and participate in flexibility markets. Noova has more than a decade of experience in flexibility markets. technology that can help turn a large, power-hungry facility from a passive load into a more flexible participant in the energy system — potentially improving both grid utilisation and the economics of power access. Entra uses Noova’s technology for energy monitoring and reporting across its portfolio.

    Elink: Turning Buildings Into Grid Assets


    Could a commercial building make money by helping balance the power grid? Enlink combines hardware and software to connect controllable loads — from heat pumps and ventilation to water heaters and electric boilers — and aggregate them into a virtual power plant. The result is buildings that can respond to the needs of the grid without compromising normal operations. At The Nordic Tech Stack, Enlink shows the numbers behind the technology: how much flexibility is actually hidden inside our buildings, what that flexibility is worth to the power system — and the net value a building owner can capture by putting existing assets to work.
